“Settin’ up a Setting”

Well, as you might surmise, these pictures capture my weekend. They are all taken with a filter app called “Huji” that my girlfriend likes, and I think it gives them all a more surreal, bright, night-on-the-town kind of vibe.

The first one is obviously at a bar, so that night-life feeling is not so subtle. I do enjoy how a lot of the background is faded and blurry, adding to the fact that the focus is directed to the middle of the frame – to me! I also think it is cool how my body and pool stick draw your attention down to their natural point of focus – the cue ball! And lastly, that distorted light on the top left corner of the frame adds to the night-out feeling, slightly making you feel the drinks a little.

The second and third pictures are from my Valentines Day dinner in Kennebunkport. I feel as though in these images the sky is more than just black, it is nonexistent, it is darker than black. There might be a little bit of an ominous vibe, but I feel as though it is probably more solemn and peaceful. In the second picture shadows are doing some crazy things, creating some fun, eye-catching patterns that are boxed in well by the extra-bright string lights. The red adds a touch of romance too. The third one has a nice mirroring effect with the water, and I think the flat composition with the sign, the restaurant interior and the boat all nicely lining up is very satisfying. It drags your eye from one of the three forms to another and back again, making you feel like you are sightseeing, capturing a little bit of the vibe we were feeling as we walked through the cute little townsquare.

The last one I did not expect to take, but it was too good not to include in this assignment. I am juxtaposed to the clear hole in the wall, holding the missing piece, but with a smile on my face that assures you that everything is okay. I think that this evokes a feeling of embracing the chaos, of being in control of the situation, of going with the flow. This was a little after the Super Bowl; things got a little out of hand.
